Polio: Syria update, Democratic Republic of the Congo
Democratic Republic of the CongoIn the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), two separate circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2s (cVDPV2s) have been confirmed. It is pertinent to mention that Syrian Arab Republic introduced two doses of inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) in the routine infant immunization schedule in 2008. Most recently, two campaigns have been conducted in March and April 2017 using bivalent oral polio vaccine (bOPV). As of 6 June 2017, a total of 58 AFP cases have been reported from the Governorate this year. Since the confirmation of the first VDPV2 during May 2017, AFP surveillance has been intensified in the Governorate, especially in the Al Mayadeen district.''In the Democratic Republic of the Congo two separate circulating vaccine-derived polio virus type 2s have been confirmed. In a statement, the WHO said two polio cases were detected in Haut-Lomami and Maniema provinces. The latest outbreak is being seen as a setback to international efforts against the virus in the region. "The first strain has been isolated from two acute flaccid paralysis cases from two districts in Haut-Lomami province.
