The Telegraph : declared in Annual jab which could replace statins to be tested on humans

A yearly injection which could replace statins is to be tested on humans, following successful animal studies. Around eight million Britons currently take daily pills to ward off heart attacks and strokes, by reducing their cholesterol levels. NHS guidance recommends that around 40 per cent of adults take statins, to protect against heart disease, one of the UK's most common killers. But many have been put off by fears of side-effects. But the new research found that a vaccine was able to cut cholesterol by over half, while dramatically reducing fatty deposits in the arteries, and damage caused by hardening and narrowing of arteries.

Cholesterol-lowering jab could help prevent heart attacks

A new vaccination that prevents heart attacks and could provide an effective alternative to statins is being developed by Austrian scientists. Professor Sir Nilesh Samani, medical director at the British Heart Foundation, said: "Having high cholesterol can put you at significantly higher risk of a potentially life-threatening heart attack or stroke. "Although only tested in mice, this vaccine could lead to a simple way to target high cholesterol and ultimately reduce people's risk of heart disease. The vaccine, known as AT04A, triggers the production of antibodies that target an enzyme involved in regulating levels of blood cholesterol. It is made in the liver and blocks receptor molecules on cells that allow the body to get rid of harmful cholesterol.
