UC commissioners weigh health insurance options
— The Union County commissioners heard from three health insurance companies Monday in a quest to find less expensive coverage for county employees. County employees pay only a penny for health insurance premiums each year, but the current plan has deductibles and co-pays that employees pay. The third company was Apex Benefits, which negotiates health insurance claims for a number of Indiana counties, including Fayette, according to Apex advisor Bill Sylvester. Union County, the second-smallest in the state, must either reduce health insurance and ambulance service costs or look at imposing additional local income taxes to stay solvent and provide services to residents. Commissioner Paul Wiwi said he doesn't want any hospitals hounding county employees for payment. The next Marshall County Board of Supervisors meeting is set for 9 a.m. May 2 in meeting room no. Action was taken at Tuesday's Marshall County Board of Supervisors meeting on employee health coverage, and the supervisors were presented with updates from Marshalltown Youth and Shelter Services and Alliant Energy. "We actually had a reduction in some of our health insurance rates."The board renewed health insurance coverage for county employees through the organization going into Fiscal Year 2018, with coverage is set to begin July 1. "This was one of the nice things that came out of our last insurance meeting," Board Vice Chair Dave Thompson said of the current employee health and prescription drug benefit plan through Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield. The project will be funded with federal dollars and was let by the Iowa Department of Transportation on March 21.
