Latest H3N2 vaccine ineffective for people over 65 stat : NBC Montana

Latest H3N2 vaccine ineffective for...KALISPELL, Mont. - According to a report from U.S. health officials Wednesday this year's influenza vaccine was ineffective for people 65 years and older. It says the vaccine for the dominant strain of flu, Type A H3N2, worked just 43 percent of the time in all age groups. Flathead County Health Department's Joe Russell said you didn't have to look far to see that was the case. That was the case all across the state, where there were 7,861 cases of influenza and 813 hospitalizations in 2016-2017, compared to 4,734 cases and 433 hospitalizations in 2015-2016.

Besides them, the vaccine appeared to offer little protection for adults aged 18–49 years. CDC's preliminary report on the latest influenza season revealed that vaccinated Americans received a modest level of protection against the virus. On the other hand, it was about 60% effective for young children—although less, but still reasonably, effective for older children as well as adults aged 50–64 years. CDC investigators are exploring questions like whether past vaccinations affect vaccine efficacy and if a higher-dose product produces better results. Those aged 65 years and older, who present the greatest risk of influenza-related mortality, were hospitalized during the most recent cycle at the highest clip since the challenging 2014–15 season.
