N.C. Health Choice is made possible by the federal Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) created in 1997 with strong bipartisan support. Health insurance coverage among children in North Carolina has reached a historic high of 96 percent according to the N.C. Child and the North Carolina Institute of Medicine's 2017 North Carolina Child Health Report Card. Medicaid and N.C. Health Choice are the primary coverage sources for children in North Carolina – insuring over half of all N.C. children. Health insurance coverage is the foundation for good, lifelong health. N.C. has never cut kids from N.C. Health Choice rolls.
