The original Affordable Care Act was not universal health care, but it was close to it. China, Sri Lanka, Costa Rica, Cuba, and the Indian state of Kerala are other examples of success in universal health care. We also know that Canada, Great Britain, and other European countries have effective universal health care systems. Whenever universal health care is mentioned, the custodians of the status quo come out swinging. Opponents say that universal health care is expensive and the country can't afford it.

My Republican colleagues in Congress agree that we must fix the health care system and lower health care costs for our constituents, but there are varying viewpoints about how to proceed. Coloradans are feeling the effects of a broken health care system now more than ever. Health insurance for someone in my situation — I'm in good health, I have some savings — is just not a smart economic choice."This woman's situation is not unique. Additionally, I believe that giving associations and small businesses the opportunity to band together to establish health plans will help provide consumers with more health care options.
