House Bill 460, by Rep. John Berthelot, R-Gonzales, would allow the fire marshal to buy insurance to cover treatments for heart and lung disease, strokes, and certain types of cancer. The benefits would last until the volunteer reaches age 71. "We're finding now more than ever that firefighters are losing their lives because of these occupational injuries, especially from the exposure of smoke and toxic gasses."More news todayRead or Share this story: http://www.theadvertiser.com/story/news/local/louisiana/2017/04/17/volunteer-firefighters-could-get-health-insurance/100567068/ "Too often we don't say thank you enough," Berthelot said.Your federal income taxes are due today and, likely for several million people, so is a fine for failing to get health insurance. If you bought your own insurance from the federal or a state health insurance exchange and you got a federal tax credit to help pay for that coverage, you also have to take a step before you can file your taxes. Nearly 13 million tax filers claimed an exemption for 2015 taxes, according to the IRS. The maximum fine is $2,676; that is the national average cost of a "bronze" level insurance plan available on the health exchanges. Last year, said the IRS, an estimated 6.5 million tax filers paid a fine that averaged $470.
