News plex : declared in Review of Veterans Affairs D.C. medical center pledged

Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin is pledging a top-down review at the VA medical center in the nation's capital. Wednesday's inspector general report points to a number of "serious and troubling deficiencies" at the Washington facility. He says he is installing one of his advisers, Lawrence Connell, as acting director of the medical center to ensure fixes are made. Shulkin is describing the problems identified by the VA inspector general as unacceptable. A watchdog report warns that patients are being put at risk because of bad inventory practices that can lead to dirty syringes and medical supply shortages.


Report: VA medical center in crisis

VA has temporarily moved human resources responsibilities for hiring for the D.C. medical center to its Baltimore medical center. The Washington DC VA Medical Center provides care to almost 100,000 veterans from across the region. "Many VA medical centers have a really hard time hiring, but this seems worse than the others," Missal said. The VA placed the head of the medical center on leave Wednesday afternoon and brought in a senior agency official and additional staff. "We have not seen anything quite like this at a VA facility," said Inspector General Michael J. Missal.

McLane Children's Medical Center held it's second annual Stand Up Against Child Abuse event. According, to Children's Advocacy Centers of Texas 185 children here in Texas are victims of child abuse everyday. "We must as communities understand that when a hospital of this nature has 872 child abuse victims in a year we have a epidemic that needs to be addressed." The event focused on raising awareness of the child abuse issue that is rising in the community. Hardy also says she hopes that events like this will keep the community informed and if urges anyone that suspects child abuse to report it.
