Medicaid Changes Would Hurt Health Care For All Kids, Packard Children’s CEO Writes according to : stanford

Although only some children and families are publicly insured, all children are dependent on Medicaid funding, Christopher Dawes, president and CEO of Lucile Packard Children's Hospital and Stanford Children's Health, writes in a recent Huffington Post op-ed. Because relatively few children need specialized care, all of them are sent to regional specialty centers such as Packard Children's. Therefore, proposed changes in federal health care funding could have a severe impact on all kids, even those with private insurance, he writes, explaining:If Medicaid funding is compromised, it destabilizes the entire children's health care system on two fronts: it reduces care providers' ability to offer specialty programs for chronically ill children, and it ignores the critical role of preventative and wellness care for all kids. Medicaid also provides vital access to the foundation of preventive primary care for conditions like obesity and asthma, access to immunizations, and the detection of serious conditions, which reduces medical costs down the road. Sharepediatric medical care is different, too.

April 27, 2017 - A new report by the Commonwealth Fund found that Medicaid provides equal or better quality health coverage to private health insurance plans. "Medicaid is giving people what they want and need—affordable health insurance and access to care"The Commonwealth Fund Biennial Health Insurance Survey,2016 was conducted from July to November 20, 2016. Medicaid enrollees rated highest in member satisfaction, with 57 percent of Medicaid members citing the care they received as very good or excellent. The study found Medicaid recipients rated ahead of private payers in two main areas: better access to health care and fewer problems related to medical bills. For the study, private insurance coverage included employer-sponsored and individual plans.

Threat To Medicaid Puts Children's Health Care On The Line

Medicaid, the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and the Children's Hospital Graduate Medical Education (CHGME) program are the foundation of the entire child health care system. While the proposed American Health Care Act remains unresolved, members of Congress and citizens alike must recognize the importance of Medicaid for children's health. However, often in health care policy discussions, the child population is overshadowed by the much larger expenditures generated by adults. Our message to Congress about the importance of children's health is threefold:Children are not small adults. Children's health is paramount to the success and stability of our nation's future.
