In 2001-2002, 18.9 percent of Americans lived in states with medical marijuana laws, and one-third of Americans lived in states with medical marijuana laws between 2012 and 2013. Illicit marijuana use and cannabis-use disorders increased in states with medical marijuana laws, according to a study published Wednesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association Psychiatry. The time periods were significant in that no states had marijuana medical laws between 1991 and 1992. Compared to 24 states that never had any medical marijuana laws, illicit use had increased by 2.2 percentage points. In the study, illicit use was defined as "getting high" with no medicinal purpose.
If Governor Hickenlooper signs off on this bill, Colorado will join at least 15 other states that already have PTSD on the list of uses for medical marijuana. Colorado is now one step closer to allowing medical marijuana to treat post-traumatic stress. The medical marijuana dispensary founder agrees, Colorado should have had this on the books years ago. And he says adding PTSD to the eight qualified conditions for medical marijuana use has the potential to help save more veterans across Colorado. The Senate approved the bill on Tuesday and it is now heading to Governor Hickenlooper's desk for final approval.
