Rare conjoined twins with common heart born at Sion HospMUMBAI: A 26-year-old Mahim resident gave birth to a rare kind of conjoined twins, who share a heart and legs but have separate heads, at the civic-run Sion Hospital on Wednesday."These conjoined twins are not the usual type, but have a very complex internal architecture.Externally, they have two separate heads and necks, but a partially common thorax (the part between the neck and the abdomen); and are completely fused below the umbilicus (navel) level," said Sion Hospital dean Dr Suleman Merchant.Their mother (TOI has decided to withhold her name at her request) came to Sion Hospital well into the seventh month of pregnancy.

3D print of conjoined twins to help docs plan surgeryMumbai: It may take a few more days more before doctors at civic-run Sion Hospital decide on whether to surgically separate the rare, conjoined twins who were born with a single heart on Wednesday.Hospital dean Dr Suleman Merchant told TOI that his team is exploring the feasibility of preparing a 3D model of the twins' entire body for better planning."We will do the 3D printing in such a manner that the body's internal architecture can be seen through a transparent body,'' said Dr Merchant, adding that such a model would make "surgical planning easy ''.
