CNN : reported that Promising Zika vaccine moves to next stage

Scientists around the world are scrambling to create viable versions of a Zika vaccine. (CNN) We are one step closer to a vaccine against the Zika virus. Some of the volunteers will get the vaccine, and some will get a placebo, in order to see if it can prevent Zika. The vaccine will not be tested in pregnant women, but it will be tested in women of child-bearing age. The vaccine is being tested at 11 sites including in Miami, Puerto Rico, Brazil and Mexico.

Phase two, which the current Zika testing is in, usually involves a larger pool of participants and a focus on testing safety. "I am pleased to report that we have begun testing the Zika DNA Vaccine," said Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., the director of NIAID. Government scientists from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) say they have entered the second phase in developing the experimental DNA vaccine designed to protect against disease caused by Zika infection. The most common symptoms of Zika virus is fever, rash, joint pain, and red eyes, as well as muscle pain and headache, according to CDC. A research specialist at the AIDS Vaccine Research Labs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, processes body fluids taken from pregnant rhesus macaque monkeys infected with the Zika virus on June 28, 2016 in Madison, Wisconsin.

The experimental vaccine does not have any infectious material, so researchers say it can't cause a person to become infected with Zika. By Lena H. Sun, The Washington PostAn experimental Zika vaccine has moved successfully into broader testing, with the first volunteer receiving a test dose in Houston earlier this week. NIAID researchers engineered a small circular piece of DNA called a plasmid so it contains genes coded for proteins of the Zika virus.
