(AP Photo/Pablo Martinez Monsivais)WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump signed a bill Saturday that Nevada lawmakers hailed for providing funds for veterans who receive medical care from doctors at facilities outside the Department of Veterans' Affairs. Following remarks about the protests, Trump and Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin thanked "our incredible veterans" for past sacrifices. Contained in the legislation is $2.1 billion in emergency funds to continue to cover costs of veterans to receive medical care from doctors outside the VA system in fiscal year 2018, which begins Oct. 1. More than 225,000 veterans live in Nevada, of which 21,000 are women and nearly half, or 120,000 veterans, are younger than 65, the Department of Veterans Affairs reports. The legislation signed into law will provide for new medical facility leases for outpatient clinics.

Trump signs bill to fund veterans medical care program
President Donald Trump has signed an emergency spending bill that will pump more than $2 billion into a program that allows veterans to receive private medical care at government expense. Trump, who made improving veterans care a central campaign promise, signed the VA Choice and Quality Employment Act while at his New Jersey golf club on Saturday. The bill, which addresses a budget shortfall at the Department of Veteran Affairs that threatened medical care for thousands of veterans, provides $2.1 billion to continue funding the Veterans Choice Program, which allows veterans to seek private care. Another $1.8 billion will go to core VA health programs, including 28 leases for new VA medical facilities. Shulkin announced the budget shortfall last month, citing unexpected demand from veterans for private care and poor budget planning.

Trump signs bill helping vets get access to private medical care

President Trump signed into law a bill providing over $2 billion to open new Veterans Affairs department medical facilities and fund care for veterans seeking medical care outside the government system on Saturday. "You're going to have immediate medical care for our veterans." Caldwell's mention of $1.8 billion is a reference to the money authorized for the new VA facilities, which CVA opposed. "President Trump is dedicated to maintaining a strong VA, and we will not allow VA to be privatized on our watch. We agree with Secretary Shulkin that the Veterans Choice Program is not the end state of veterans' health care choice."
