Column: Health insurance costs to turn a corner
Health insuranceOne of the major concerns for residents in our region has been the rising cost of health insurance. Since 2014, premium rates in Minnesota have been increasing by double digits annually (almost 60 percent in 2017). I'm pleased to tell you that we've taken a step in the right direction toward making the individual health insurance market more cost friendly and competitive in southeastern Minnesota. At the end of July, the Minnesota Department of Commerce released preliminary rates for the 2018 individual health insurance market, revealing some improved news for Minnesota ratepayers. The Minnesota Premium Security Plan, which was passed this session, will result in premium rate decreases for tens of thousands of Minnesotans who purchase their health insurance from the individual market.
Health insurance exchanges are on shaky ground. Here's how to fix them
This means that the health insurance exchanges — which make it possible for people who do not get health insurance through work or government programs to buy it — will continue to function. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, the painful price hikes in the 2017 insurance plans offered by the exchanges were sufficient to stabilize the finances of many insurers. Under the least-expensive bronze plan, the insurance company covers 60 percent of the expected costs of health care. By lowering health insurance premiums, a copper plan would be more attractive to relatively healthy people, which would increase enrollment and lower average premiums.
