"Medical cannabis is listed as a Schedule 1 controlled substance under the Controlled Substances Act of 1970. Gentile, a businessman from Hoover, said his stance does not mean he supports the use of recreational marijuana. Many of them have symptoms that can be relieved by cannabis that is specifically formulated for medical use.

The VA secretary said federal law presently prohibits doctors at the department's facilities from prescribing medical marijuana for any condition. However, his openness to the concept of introducing cannibis products drew attention on Wednesday, particularly because Attorney General Jeff Sessions has voiced so much opposition to loosening restrictions on marijuana use at the federal level.
