medical marijuana bill moves onThe Dominion PostCHARLESTON — The Senate's medical marijuana bill took another step forward March 28, winning overwhelming support of the Senate Judiciary Committee and coming up for passage March 29. Members also approved a medical marijuana resolution to send to Congress. Judiciary passed an amended version of the bill, 13-3, that will be up for adoption March 29 before passage. SB 386 creates a Medical Cannabis Commission under the Department of Health and Human Resources. The concurrent resolution originated by the committee calls on Congress to remove marijuana from Schedule I, meaning it has no medicinal value, to another schedule where it can be prescribed.

House leaders are opposed to medical marijuana so Senate Republicans may be reluctant to send the House a bill they know the House leadership is against. She added that her mother now is suffering from a series of health issues and she could benefit from medical marijuana as well. The bill limits the number of medical marijuana growers in the state to 15 and the number of dispensaries to 60. Currently, more than half of U.S. states permit medical marijuana and eight states have legalized cannabis for recreational purposes. Earlier in the session members of the House who support medical marijuana tried to amend the provision into another bill, but failed 35-64.

The House bill is supported by many of the same organizations that fought against Florida's medical marijuana amendment, and largely opposed by medical marijuana advocates. One of six plans to regulate medical marijuana moved forward in the state House on Tuesday after the first hearing for any of the plans. The bill includes some of the strictest controls on Florida's nascent medical marijuana industry of any plan offered by the Legislature.
