Just 20 conditions make up more than half of all spending on health care in the United States, according to a new comprehensive financial analysis that examines spending by diseases and injuries.The most expensive condition, diabetes, totaled $101 billion in diagnoses and treatments, growing 36 times faster than the cost of ischemic heart disease, the number-one cause of death, over the past 18 years.While these two conditions typically affect individuals 65 and older, low back and neck pain, the third-most expensive condition, primarily strikes adults of working age.

Health care spending on children grew 56 percent between 1996 and 2013, with the most money spent in 2013 on inpatient well-newborn care, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and well-dental care, according to an article published online by JAMA Pediatrics.Joseph L. Dieleman, Ph.D., of the University of Washington, Seattle, and coauthors used the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation Disease Expenditure 2013 project database to estimate health care spending.Annual estimates were done for each year from 1996 through 2013 and estimates were reported using inflation-adjusted 2015 dollars.

The U.S. Department of Defense and Medicare are set to launch pilot programs to test a healthcare policy idea conceived at the University of Michigan.So-called Value-Based Insurance Design, or V-BID, ditches a uniform co-pay structure in favor of lowering costs for medical care deemed to be of high value to patients."We like to think life-saving drugs for diabetes, cancer, depression and HIV should cost less than toenail-fungus drugs or drugs that make your hair grow back," said Mark Fendrick, director of the Center for Value-based Insurance Design at the University of Michigan.
