HUNDREDS of WA parents anxious to protect their children from the deadly meningococcal disease have joined long vaccine wait lists with pharmacies as the bacterial infection claims more lives.But families will have to wait until at least January for the jab as a global shortage of the vaccine means pharmacies across WA have run out of supplies.A survey of 30 pharmacies across the State by The Sunday Times this week discovered it was impossible to secure a prescription for the meningococcal B-strain vaccine.

Rebecca Gredley Australian Associated PressAn increase in W strain meningococcal cases in Western Australia has prompted state Health Minister John Day to pressure the federal government to provide a subsidy for the vaccine.Three people have died from meningococcal disease in WA this year - two from the W strain and one from strain Y.Over the past three years, there has been an increase in the number of cases of strain W cases in WA - from an average of one case a year to two cases in 2014, four in 2015 and 12 cases to date this year.

Shortage of meningococcal vaccine in WA is not cause for concern, Health Minister saysUpdatedThe WA Health Minister John Day has confirmed a worldwide shortage of meningococcal vaccine has caused wait times to blow out in Western Australia."I understand there's only one manufacturer worldwide and they are finding it hard to keep up with the demand," he said.The vaccine for the B strain of the disease is not expected to be re-stocked until early next year, but the minister denied it was cause for concern.
