The Colorado Foundation for Universal Health Care and the Health Care for All Colorado Foundation continue their grassroots efforts to create some type of single-payer health care system in our state. The headlines decry "Obamacare in Death Spiral" and cite as proof that insurance companies are pulling out of health insurance exchanges. The original Obama health care bill offered a public option — sort of a government run health insurance company to compete with existing companies and keep the rates down. The House health care bill eliminated those payments. In truth, Obamacare or the Affordable Care Act is being sabotaged by the uncertainty perpetuated by the current administration.

Florida Blue, Florida's largest health insurer, intends to offer individual health plans in all 67 counties in Florida in 2018, North Florida market president Darnell Smith said Thursday. About 1 million people in Florida bought insurance for 2017 from Florida Blue in the state's individual marketplace, which is where people buy health insurance when they don't get it through an employer or government program. Florida Blue has until next Wednesday to file its 2018 rates with the Office of Insurance Regulation. "You need both in order for people to afford health care," Smith said. People can begin buying health insurance through the individual market Nov. 1.

Cleveland Clinic and Oscar Health team up to offer co-branded health insurance

Cleveland Clinic is venturing into the health insurance business for the first time with Oscar Health. The health plans are expected to be sold on the Ohio health insurance exchange as well as off the exchange starting in 2018. Consumers in five northeast Ohio counties – Cuyahoga, Summit, Lorain, Medina and Lake – will be able to purchase Cleveland Clinic | Oscar individual health plans. Cleveland Clinic and Oscar Health will integrate their clinical and consumer care approaches. Oscar Health was launched in 2012 as Oscar Insurance Corp. by Josh Kushner, the younger brother of Jared Kushner and two Harvard Business School classmates, Kevin Nazemi and Mario Schlosser, according to Bloomberg Businessweek.
